My husband and I have been talking to the Portuguese community about their right to vote and become involved in what is happening regarding the future of our beautiful Island. We have had a lot of them registering to vote and joining the JDA. In 2008 a community – especially a small community like Jersey’s really cannot afford not to value all who contribute to it!
We know of people that have lived here for many years , they consider Jersey to be their home yet they are still living in poor damp, overcrowded and expensive accommodation .The JDA are doing every thing they can to help. Because we can speak their language they find it easier to talk to us. The JDA are also trying to translate as much of the information for the elections into both Portuguese and Polish.
We need to be inclusive of all our nationalities as they are what make Jersey so rich in culture. Without the Portuguese community that has been here for 40/50 years now Jersey would not be what it is today and they should be recognised for that.
Just one recent case history we know of is a long-established Portuguese family living in a 1 bedroom flat, with 2 young children. They did not realise they were entitled to have housing qualifications. One of the children is ill and has to go to hospital and the doctors regularly. Their flat is also damp and beyond any doubt not up to the basic standard that the government of an affluent island like Jersey should be ensuring. The JDA are trying to help this family.
“E ou teu direito de votar . Voces sabem o que tĂȘn que faser por favor.” Vote para ou JDA .
